Knitting-related lists ....
| General : 1. First time I picked up a pair of knitting needles or crochet hook was when I was a kidlet. 2. Granny was knitting/crocheting ponchos for all the grand-daughters. 3. This was in Singapore. 4. That poncho was the only handknitted item someone's ever made for me. 5. That pocho was also the only handknitted item I've ever owned till I learned to knit. 6. I taught myself to knit when I moved to Australia in 1983. 7. My ex-stepmother-in-law knitted baby clothes for my first son who was born in 1984. 8. I still have the pseudo tortoiseshell needles she sent me when she found out that I was learning to knit. 9. My favourite yarn then was Paton's Totem. 10. I mainly did Intarsia. When I moved to the U.S. 1. I stopped knitting. 2. They don't have Paton's Totem here. 3. I wasn't about to use acrylic. 4. I knew about Patternworks & Herrschners mail order service but "mail order" was too foreign for me. 5. I knew about Patternworks & Herrschners mail order service but buying yarn without looking & touching it was too strange for me. 6. The only LYS had a pitiful selection and coming from Australia, it seemed overpriced. 7. It came down to baby clothes made from 100% acrylic or knit my own 100% wool in 1995. 8. I chose to knit. 9. In 2003, I discovered I could easily purchase yarn on Ebay & other online shops. 10. There are now - Wizard Weavers. This is the store I went to in 1995. I re-visited it a few weeks ago. It is now half its original size. Selection is even more pitiful. The owner has a couple of comfortable chairs set up with a coffee table. She was doing some needlework with a friend. She had her feet up on the table. This set up was right in front of the "notions carousel". In fact, it was blocking anyone from looking through the notions. I was looking for some dpns and told her so when asked. She insisted on looking for them herself & absolutely refused to let me look for anything else, even when she had already stood up & walked away. I will never go in that store again. - One More Stitch. I've been here a couple of times. Both times, it hasn't been crowded but the staff & owner just seem to be "occupied". They're a Rowan stockist and have others brand that I use like Noro, Colinette, etc. I was specifically looking for Debbie Bliss' Noro 1, but they didn't have it. Why? Although they have Kureyon & maybe, Silk Garden, they don't offer support (any Noro books) because folks in Cincinnati only used those yarns for scarves. They couldn't sell me a whole bag or two of any colourway because they didn't order anything in lots of that size. Don't think I'll be going there much. - For a "million dollar inventory", they didn't have much. Guess their specialties are frou-frou yarn for scarves & Cascade 220 for felted bags. Knit Happens has closed its doors. When the weather's better, I will try Fiberge & Fiber Naturell. Equipment WishList : 1. Wooly board 2. Blocking board 3.
